Hiya Becky,

Glad you're enjoying the Akua inks! That's great. Looking forward to seeing your results.

I don't know about anything that is truly "non-toxic"; everything has pigments and materials that are not entirely healthy. I don't believe that any plant-oil-based inks are any more toxic than water-based. Which is actually a mis-nomer; very few inks are water based, if any; Speedball is the only one that could really be referred to as that, and even then it's not accurate, because it uses gum arabic as the main carrier. Anything called "water based" by most people is either acrylic based or oil-based, but that they're water soluble or water miscible (mixable). I have tried water-soluble Graphic Chemical, Faust, Daniel Smith, Caligo Safe Wash and Akua, and of those, only Graphic Chemical is not oil-based (it's more akin to acrylic). My biggest concern is for scent, and they all smell, but the Daniel Smith bothers me the least of them all.

It seems that most "non-toxic" printmaking studios use Akua. Check out Zea Mays and Nontoxic Printmaker for resources and information. Good luck!

I just tried the Faust AquaLine on my new block print, and yes, you're right, they are a lot more transparent (it had been a while!). I managed to get pretty good coverage, but it is definitely a serious consideration.

I do really like the Faust inks; they're lovely to handle. I haven't noticed the black being particularly transparent, but I haven't used it on top of other things yet, I guess. Faust are excellent at customer response; I've been in contact with Peter Faust about different colours, and he was very good to give me those sample inks I used in the Koi print. You might want to contact them about the transparency issue.

Your work is lovely. I especially like your tool mark use in the prints. I think my favourite is the moorhen (coot).

There's a rumor I'll be back at Ball State for a little artist visit this Spring. Maybe I can see some of your work in person then.

Nice bold cutting and great use of color. You have a cutting style that reminds me of David Johnson (I found you through his friends list).

Hi Becky, your prints look great, inspirational to me. What do you use to glue the fabric on? I told a student book glue. Thanks for the invite. Your books looked good when I saw them and so did your kid and the husband too. Good to see you keeping up the good work.
